Nunavut Fisheries and Marine Training Consortium

Nunavut Fisheries and Marine Training Consortium is a unique partnership formed in Nunavut to bring together government, private sector industry and Inuit organizations to provide training to Nunavut Inuit and other nunavutmmiut enabling them to take advantage of full time sustainable employment oppertuniries in the fishing industry. Originally named Nunavut Fishers Training Contortium when it was established in 2004, the only focus was on training related to the fishing industry. In 2012, they realized that their mandate should be widened to include all marine training, which includes the fishing industry – in all sectors, offshore, inshore and processing plants, includes working in cargo vessels, small fishing boats and work on the Government of Nunavut’s research vessel, Nuliajuk. So the name was changed to Nunavut Fisheries and Marine Training Consortium. This was a response to the need for additional marine training and also a response to the students who were seeking employment in these other sectors.

NFMTC’s Training Facilities include a bridge training simulator. Desktop based computer system allowing students to emulate the operation of a vessel in various navigations areas, using various boats and in various weather conditions. The system includes two student work stations and instructor work station, a basic navigation module, which an ice navigation module (allowing students to navigate in ice conditions) and a fishing module, which allows students to simulate a fishing trip – this includes finding the fish, dropping the nets and pulling the nets back into the boat. NFMTC currently has a training centre here in Iqaluit at building 1515 Federal Road.
